I left the windows in because I liked the look of them
being blown out. Plus, I believe there is a certain
logic to it as well in that you can see where the
light on her face is coming from giving the shot a
sense of place. For me, this blunts the overexposure.
Plus, I really like the look of the lantern in the
window and didn't want to lose it.

I did the same thing. After a while, I felt that none
of the crops had added anything to the shot. Some may
have been much more formal but a lot less interesting
as a consequence.
