Thanks Bill - in this case, I don't think that's the problem.  There is a 
tool from Nero which analyses the drive and reports it's capabilities, and, 
assuming it does a proper job, it reports that the drive can use, inter 
alia, DVD-R and DVD-RW at Write speeds of 16x and Read speeds of 24x.  I 
noticed on another site (can't remember the URL as I was on someone else's 
computer at the time) that DVD-RAM drives are very fussy about the media 
used - something about some being too shiny(!).
