I saw that photo too. But I picked a more neutral one as an example. An
example of HDR effects in general, not on his work. 

Maybe making an example was a mistake.

This guy is using HDR to exaggerate the lighting for effect, I don't
believe it's meant to be photo-realistic in this instance. See some of
