Ok, I have tried it.  Indeed, as Pal described the center sensor works
equally well with vertical and horizontal lines.  The other sensors are only
sensitive to vertical (upper middle sensor) or horizontal (remaining
sensors).  I knew that MZ-S hit ratio on focusing was an improvement over
the PZ-1p.  So I guess we could say that basically there is a cross sensor
in the middle.
