Having purchased a pair of LCD panels at the start of this year for a twinscreen setup, I had to get this question straight for myself.
As I remember it, 8 bit panel - all colours are in direct pixel drive mode - each pixel colour has 256 possible intensities which gives 256 x 256 x 256 + 16 777 216 defined colours (16.7 million) 6 bit panel - cheaper and thus welcomed by the manufacturers - only 262 144 directly driven colour shades - the balance of the 16.2 million are simulated by modulating the pixels by rapid on off switching which is not as effective as simple level modulation - thus apparently colour accuracy is noticeably impaired according to the graphics gurus. I got both my panels as 8 bit and am very pleased with the colour accuracy although I had to spend a considerable time with grey step wedges getting each channel properly related in my Dell 1905FP and with the calibration program that came with my ViewSonic VP930b. Sadly the 8 bit Dell is replaced by the 6 bit 1907 and I probably got one of the last of the 1905's so I cannot usefully recommend it :( The viewsonic is OK but has quite a distorted native gamma in the blue channel which was difficult to correct using the supplied calibration software. It is only 95% (estim) right and has a slight grey scale hue error in the first level of grey from full white. Rod -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Patrice LACOUTURE (GMail) For sure 6-bit would be 64*64*64 = 262144 colors, which is definitely *NOT* 16.2 million. Even 2 colors with 8 bits and one with 7 bit would be a bit more than 8 million colors. Therefore the reason must be something else than bit depth, though I haven't any clue what it might be, sorry.
