Hey Mike - welcome.
This discussion group is like a large extended family (including the
requisite odd-balls that you'll find in any large family.) We have some
very accomplished photographers and some who are still figuring out
what all of the buttons do and many in between. Usually you can get
useful answers to Pentax related questions, though sometimes you may
have to persist past the initial sarcastic replies from the "experts"
who are tired of answering questions and think that everyone should
have been paying attention to previous discussions that have taken
place over the last few years. We have folks who have shot nothing but
Pentax for decades who can put the newer equipment into a historical
perspective. We have others who have partially or totally migrated to
Pentax from other brands who can put Pentax into a broader photographic
perspective. And a few who have migrated away from Pentax but hang on
in this group.
The volume of posts in a given day can be overwhelming, but selective
use of the delete-thread button can yield a manageable, informative,
and fun experience.
The group has a number of frequent travelers (me included) and there
are aperiodic opportunities for face-to-face gatherings in obscure
locales (Sydney, Melbourne, London, Amersfoort NE, Toronto, Washington
D.C., NYC, Grandfather Mountain NC, Naples IT, Bay Area California, are
a few that come to mind.) It looks like you are based in D.C.; I am
spending most of my time in D.C. this fall, with my next free weekend
days being 2 December and 16-17 December if you are interested in a
photo expedition or an afternoon beer or whatever.

Again, welcome! And be sure to check out the FAQs compiled and
maintained by Greywolf (a recluse living in a small cave in the NC
mountain wilderness.) Also be sure to ignore all posts from Frank (a
committed film photographer who lives in a small cave in the Toronto
wilderness, but who may be released back into society soon) and from
Cotty ( a sadist who tortures perfectly good Pentax lenses until they
agree to attach to his Canon.)

still looking for the ideal travel lens kit with appropriate quality,
function, and usability)
