1.4X-L. It performs a lot better than my 1.7, at least with the 500/4.5. And
judging from the test pictures Jostein provided, it goes for his 1.7 sample
too.
1.4X-L has slightly better resolution, better contrast, and gives less
sensor blooming. The contrast is easily corrected, but the sensor blooming
is not.
I haven't tested it properly with other lenses, but subjectively I think it
is the same with Tamron 300/2.8.

So for Joe I think it would be better finding a good 1.4 AF converter, than
the 1.7, if his prime goal is to use tc with the 600/4.

I haven't tested other converters, but I believe Tamron has pretty a good
one. I had one at eBay, but lost it because the invoice ended in my spam
folder. I will probably go looking for a 1.4 AF again after I have the K10D
in my hands.

This said. The 1.7 is good too, I will not separate with mine. But if you
don't need the extra reach, or the turning MF to AF feature (I do), then it
could be wise looking for something else.

Which 1.4TC was that? I've owned all the Pentax 1.4 TCs and after
rigorous IQ testing I only retained my AF1.7 TC and a 1.4X-L (which
has a slight advantage over the AF1.7 TC on some lenses but only at
much smaller apertures).
