It means they've changed *something* about the protocol, but since they're (obviously) privy to the inner workings of their own protocols they were able to be sure that it was backwards compatible with earlier models. Third-party manufacturers don't have that luxury. This is doubtless part of the reason there are so few third-party options available for Pentax-compatible flashes.
