I think I understand - you want to archive your files in compressed DNG
format, and having compressed DNG's would be an obvious advantage WRT
images per gigabyte of SD card storage space.

I'll confess to being a bit of a caveman in that I never heard of DNG
till today. One thing that has always worried me is archiving files in a
proprietary format - like PEF - that may not be accessible in the future
if software support for them stops. I assume that in the future DNG will
be a more widely accessible standard than proprietary RAW standards like
PEF (and not to pick on Pentax - like propriety RAW standards for other
brands as well.)

I've been betting on TIFF as a durable standard and take a chaotic
approach to archiving, archiving TIFF and PEF and re-archiving my actual
print TIFFs images each time I pull them out and re-use them for a new
project.

It's not efficient for storage space and its not orderly for
organization, but I figure that at the end of the day I have more copies
of my most used images and therefore a greater likelihood of them
surviving the occasional bad media, and the greater likelihood of me
finding a copy of them when I need them.

When I switched from CD's to DVD's for archiving, this strategy also
resulted in virtually all of my significant images being moved from one
format to the other in a few months.

I may look into adding DNG images into the mix - I have a separate PC
that is dedicated to scanning and burning DVD's and other scut work, so
time is not a problem. I do spend more on DVD's (and future storage
media) but since I'm deliberately using redundancy and inefficiency as
the backbone of my archiving system, I can't complain about that.

I'm just happy that I'll be able to pull the K10D RAW files into
Photoshop and use the RAW converter.

Later -
