I hope so. And I suspect that military bases all over the world are
mobilizing and getting put on stand-by alert. I am sure military planes,
fully armed and loaded, are ready to take off on a moment's notice.

World Trade Center consists of several buildings. The two destroyed were
the tall ones -- 100+ stories each. They were general commercial office
buildings, full of financial institutions, business offices -- including
lots involved in international business. Probably some government
offices, too, although governments have moved out over the last several
years as rents have escalated. NY Governor's Office used to have a floor
or two, but I believe it moved out some time ago. The Center was built
and owned by a government agency, the Port of New York and New Jersey
Authority, but plans were underway to sell them to private real estate
interests. I believe the contract was signed very recently. (I guess
that deal just died.) No particular military or strategic significance
at all. Just symbols of a sort because of their prominence on the NY
skyline.
