It's those ten extra bits rattling around in there.  They're discarded when 
the 22 bit ADC produces 12 bit raw files.  I believe there's a little 
canister in the body that holds the discarded bits.  That's what you can 
hear rattling.  When full, you'll have to remove the canister to empty the 
discarded bits.
