Thank you for your advices Mark.

I have a long way to go before I am able to put up a real show. I need
better tools; read larger printer, and better monitoring. But I do need to
become a better photographer too. I have improved since I restarted
photography with my DS about a year and a half ago. But I sure have a long
way to go before I'm a decent photographer.

Never the less, this has given me the confidence to think about a new show.
I want to display my birds project.
This is a documentary project about the birds in the shoreline in my
community. They are threatened by greedy contractors who want to put up a
mall there.

I don't think my photo project will change this, but I want to contribute to
the debate on this issue. I may even sell a picture or two ;-)

Ok, the fun is over. For now...

Hi Tim -

I've done a few exhibits and I have to say I have never walked away from
anything thinking that it went perfectly. That's particularly
frustrating where I've been in control of the whole production, and I
find myself still walking away with a list (usually a long list) of what
could have been better.

But then, you know, being alive and all, I'm learning all the time and
in the days between hanging a show and seeing it at the opening I learn
new things and so would do things differently. If I was dead I'd
probably do it the way it was done 100 times before and walk away
thinking nothing could be done better.

You are right to insist on taking control of your own work and how it is
presented. I'm amazed at the photographers who take a cavalier stance
on this; but I'm also irritated by the show jurors who take too
restrictive a stance on this. That's probably a good place to be - if no
one was pissing me off I'd be best off digging a hole and burying myself.

I participated in only one show where the venue insisted on printing and
framing the shots - that was in the U.S. National Botanical Gardens on
the mall in Washington D.C., and I figured even if they screwed things
up I wanted to be in the show. (They did a fine job, BTW.)

But otherwise - insist on providing the work ready to be hung. And then
be prepared to have a lot of work in storage after the show! (And a hit
to your bank account to produce the pieces.)

Of course - the downside is they may ask you to provide the food and bubbly!

Congrats still -

MCC
