Well, be warned, this time of year there is standing water, ergo, mosquitos. 
And they close part of the park.

>From Albuquerque itself it really only takes about 40-45 minutes or so to get 
there. Not a bad side trip at all. I have a hard time estimating how long it 
took, because I was held up for quite a while at a government check point. 
This happened twice to me in New Mexico. They are looking for illegal aliens 
not 
really for illegal substances. So factor that in as well; weekdays are 
probably better than weekends. I'd say I was held up for about 20-30 minutes 
(it 
seemed a very long time). And at some hours and on some days I am sure it is 
even 
longer. There are a lot of military bases in New Mexico too, which, I am sure, 
is part of it. Especially in that area.
