As someone who takes a lot of indoor, low light people pics, I find  
it very useful. It works. But like anything else, you have to work  
with it. It's also great with long lens daylight stuff. I know I  
can't handhold a 1200mm FOV shot at 1/350th without SR. But SR makes  
it possible.
