I think we're talking about two different things.

There's a custom setting that controls whether the digicam will allow
lenses to be off the "A" setting. With this turned off, the camera
will just display "F - - " in the LCD and refuse to work. Or to
recognise that a lens is attached, if you like. This is the same for
both *istD and K10D. I don't know for the other DSLRs, but I suspect
they work the same way.

What I was thinking about, though, was what goes into the EXIF data of
the image file. I interpreted Bob S. and Godfrey to mean that lens
info for AF lenses was not written into EXIF with the lens off the "A"
position, so I had to test for myself when I got home from work.
