thanks for all the advice, everyone. I got a phone call other morning from a guy here in town, telling me there was an "eagle" of some sort hanging out in a tree, so I popped over for a look. Of course, it was gone when I arrived, but probably just as well, as looking through my bag, I realized I didn't have anything longer than 100mm. Silly me sold my FA*80-200/2.8 a few years back to finance the bike bug.
Since then, I haven't really thought about telephoto stuff, as it's gotten progressively more difficult to hold my head still long enough to peer through a tripod-mounted camera. Partner that with a new- found fascination with wide-angles.. But still, it would be nice to have something with a little reach, just in case. I've gotten a couple of nice offers.
