In the UK, the sheer existence of an extended warranty (implying that the insurer is pretty sure that nothing will go wrong in the warranty period) pretty much ensures that it is not neccessary, due to the way our consumer protection law works. One person I know bought two extended warranties, which guaranteed your fee back if there was no claim. In one, the insurance company went bust. In the second, the retailer that the warranty was bought through went bust and the insurance company refused to honour it.
