It may be possible to shoot from a few set distances if you can live with some cropping from time to time. If you can manage that, then perhaps stringing the subject distance could be done. A four foot string with a knot tied every stop of distance, for example, might speed things up for you. With really close stuff, I suspect trial and error is the best you are going to get, though you will get more accurate sooner with practice.
