I would be extremely concerned about this
banding issue and try to resolve it immediately.
 I have processed many many
digital images both film and digital sourced, most of them 8 bit
pwer channel, and I
have almost never have seen any banding at all
unless it was a very very very low contrast
poorly exposed image that was over processed back to normal
contrast. I think banding is a non issue
for any normally exposed non conrast expanded image, even
with the 8 bit/jpeg format. Could this be
a monitor artifact or something else?
I am and have been using a high grade
sony CRT for the last few years on the PC
which has excellent gray scale linearity
so I dont think my monitor could be masking
the effect if thats what you might be thinking,
it hasnt showed up on my epson 1280 prints either
and it would wouldnt it if it was there and my
monitor was masking it? Maybe this is a terminlogy
confusion issue? I always thought "banding" to be
where you can see discreet "stepped" rather than continuous
smooth changes in luminance or chroma across a gradient.
