Hi Ken -

About 10 months after I got my *ist-D I gave the sensor a decent blowing 
off with an ear-syringe (like Paul was talking about.) When I got done I 
moved a drafting style desk light into position to take a look at the 
sensor - and a big glob of dust fell right in the open camera body, 
lading on the CCD. It apparently had some oil on it (I think it fell off 
the springs on the lamp) because it stuck on the sensor - no degree of 
air blowing would clear it.

I took it to the local camera guy who tried cleaning it, but it still 
was full of spots. then I sent it to Pentax in Colorado and they did 
clean it.

After that I still had major problems with dust sticking to the sensor 
though, and probably cleaned it with wipes and methanol 4 or 5 times 
over the few months. Maybe it was residual oil still from the dust. 
Finally, after the last cleaning, it has not been a problem.

Now I look UP into the camera with a flashlight...
