The Nikon setup is rumoured to be a version of their High-Speed crop 
feature from the D2X/D2Xs, where you have a selectable 2x crop that's 
6.9MP and 8fps or the normal 1.5x crop at 12.4MP and 5fps.

The FF one would automatically crop to 1.5x when you mount a DX lens on 
it, according to the rumours (Sensing via electronics)
