I wonder if you clicked on the small - or + that is to the left of the 
icon for "inbox"?  It is connected to the other folder icons by a dotted 
line.  If an icon has a + to the left of it, it means that there are 
subfolders in that folder but they are not displayed.  The - means that 
the subfolders are displayed.  Click on the + and the subs pop into 
view, click on the - and they disappear.  Sound familiar?

Clicking on total should do nothing; clicking on the grid box on the 
right of those headers brings up the list of potential headers with the 
active ones ticked.
