By coincidence, my cousin, a fellow named Robert Sharpe was a chemical engineer for Royal Dutch Shell at that time. He was put in charge of a design team finding a substitute for tetraethyl lead. They came up with a product called methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE). Several years ago, we got together for a rare extended family dinner, and we got to talking about motor fuels. I was involved in souping up motorcycles at the time, so gasoline additives were of some interest to me. Anyway, as far as he was concerned, MTBE was a movement sideways as far as noxious additives were concerned.
