I hope so. The handwriting on the wall is extremely clear this time: any
cameramaking company that doesn't get on the digital bandwagon is doomed.
Right now, digicams are as good as 35mm...both SLRs and point-and-shoots;
it's just that both types of camera cost 3-8 times what their film
counterparts cost and, beyond that, still require a fairly sizeable
investment in peripherals and "learning time." Of course, with the
peripherals you're essentially replacing your processing lab, so it makes
sense that it costs something.
And of course, in many ways the cameras are better, too, so the higher cost
does make some sense. I mean, how many 35mm film shooters here would
appreciate a 28-200 lens with a speed of f/2 and about the size and weight
of an SMC-P 85mm f/2 and a relative quality very close to that of prime
lenses, sharp to the corners and performing extremely well at the widest
aperture? That's essentially what's on the Minolta Dimage 7.
I hope the Optio 330 is a good camera and that the next Pentax digicam is
even better. Pentax is a bit late getting on the bandwagon, so let's hope
they make a name for themselves with quality and technical capableness.
