I flew to Chicago over the holidays.  No issue with DSLR, lenses, 
batteries charges, laptop, cell phone, etc. etc. in the carry on.  I did 
notice that they looked at it for a while on the x-ray machine, but they 
never asked me to open it.  (Same with flying to Oz last August).

My thought is that they must be well trained to know what all this stuff 
looks like x-rayed because all those wires and batteries could really 
look like a bomb...  Either that, or we're all doomed.
