I'd say that if you could get the CF card into the slot backwards, without using a sufficient amount of force to destroy the slot, it was incorrectly designed to begin with. I have a card reader with a type II slot where you could possibly incorrectly insert a type one card, (though it doesn't come close to seating), but I can't put it in backwards.
