If you really want to go cheap (and by all accounts really good), take a look at Paul Roark's solution for a truly low-cost A4 solution: The Epson C88 and MIS EZ inkset.
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm A C88 will set you back less than $100, and the MIZ EZ cartridges cost around $11 each.
