"format" also implies "reformat". If you format the card in the
camera, you can be pretty darned sure it is erased, and the camera can
write to it.

I've taken to a read-only workflow on the card reader on my computer.
If it's stuff that I think is important, I'll toggle the write-protect
tab on the card before putting it in the card reader. From there, I
use the Adobe DNG converter to copy off the files, and I'll back them
up to a safe location before doing anything to them in terms of
processing.
