Not too odd.  Compression (of any kind) was only added at the
last minute; as little as a month before the final release of
the camera there was no compression of either format.

As a PEF is a private format Pentax were free to use any kind
of compression scheme they chose (working out what algorithms
they use is on my list of things to do). Compressed DNG has to
use the compression scheme called for in the DNG specification.

My guess is that Pentax implemented whatever they had the code
for readily available.  I expect to see DNG compression in a
later update to the firmware.
