my two cents... I have not compared like you are asking for but...
I do have the 18-55, which whenever I get a better lens I will most likely keep as a backup. The cost of a new one from B&H is around $100 US, plus almost everyone that buys a new camera will have one, so I doubt that the effort of selling it will be worth the reward. Also, it is smaller than the 16-45, and rather small in general, so you could possibly even carry it all the time as a backup/convenience lens.
