A trick that can be handy, especially if you have several people
updating the same site, is to keep things in a version control
system on a safer server. You then use simple scripts (like one
to ten lines each) to do more-or-less everything:

      check a set of changes you have made on your local copy
          into the respository
     update the site from the repository every now and then
     check whether the site has any changes that aren't from
           the repository (i.e. aren't yours), alert you if it does.

Rebuilding a corrupted site or putting the whole site on a new
host is then just a one-line command.

I'm not sure which version control system would be best. CVS
is the old standard, comes with every Linux or BSD system.
Subversion is a replacement developed by the Apache folks,
should handle graphics better. I'm not sure if it is ready for
prime time yet; wasn't last I looked but it has been a couple
of years. are at least half a dozen others out there.
