Over the years, I upgraded firmware of various devices, not just camera.  As
it would be burnt into ROM, I never took any unnecessary risk.  Mfrs caution
not to interrupt the upgrading process due to battery run-out etc indicates
another kind of risk.
In case of K10D firmware upgrade, I knew the formal one would follow very
soon and did not think it was the risk worth taking.

I am also influenced by many people who ruined the cell phone for example by
illegitimate upgrades.

If I had to wait for another year to get those improvements, I might have
taken the risk (being impatient as I am :-).

But it's case by case, unofficial camera firmware upgrade is usually a leak
so the risk of burning buggy firmware is probably very low to none.
Nevertheless....
