First of all, nice capture! Typical of your photos.
I can see your problem, but difficult decision. My eyes are not as
aesthetic as others, but wish to offer following.

1. yes, it would be nice to show more context. And birds look a tad small
in this frame.

2. Unfortunately, the context (trees) are too weak (blurred). I can see why
people suggesting no crop at all. It is certainly good the way it is.

3. But if you have to crop, it would obviously be a horizontal one as it
would give a bit of wide screen, panorama like look (because of the way two
birds are sort of lining up).

4. If vertical, one may have a temptation to crop the lower part but that
will cut out much of already weak trees and bring the birds too much in
centre. To show trees, upper 20% could be cropped but it will bring birds
too upward.

My taste is to crop 20% each of upper and lower horizontals which might give
the impression of high flying birds, and making it a wide frame expanse of
air.

YMMV of course.
