Thanks, Boris.  I'm not entirely sure that pentaprism vs. pentamirror
is the entire problem.  Perhaps combining a pentamirror with a small
viewfinder is the culprit.  The *ist film body has a pentamirror and
is very bright and easy to focus.  It's fairly obvious that most here
feel the viewfinder on the D is superior to the DL and K100D.  Without
having one to compare side by side, I'm trying to get a feel for the
amount of difference.  Your comment on wide lenses is step in the
right direction.  Thanks!
