Regardless of any possible technical defects, they're both excellent photos! Ah for a view like that and a clear sky to photograph...
Light pollution and haze from fog in this neighborhood makes such photography virtually impossible. When we experienced the Mars Conjunction in 2003 or so, I had to wait until the planet was well up over 40 degrees into the sky to see anything at all.
