I'm a dog trainer and am active in obedience competition. Very often, kennel
clubs have contracts with show photographers well in advance of the show. You
might want to offer to photograph at a "match", rather than a trial for
starters. It's practice for dogs and handlers and could supply some practice
for you also. Check out agility matches and breed matches, too. If there is a
training club in your area, they may invite you to bring your camera to a
class. If your pictures are good, that will be a plus for you. You might also
offer to do some studio photography for dogs and handlers.
Many obedience and agility handlers dress to "match" the dog's color ie.
black dogs - black pants, white dogs - white pants. Doesn't make for easy
pictures. However, breed handlers dress with opposite colors. Lots better for
photographing. Everyone, by the way, really appreciates having a photographer
who takes some time trying to get a good shot of both the dog and the handler.
If I can be of any further help, contact me off-line.
