IMO the best thing you can do, either on the road or the footpath, is  
to be predictable.  Maintain your current course and let them deal  
with it.

When I was a lad I was once bowled over because I panicked and jumped  
out of a cyclist's way at precisely the same time he swerved to go  
around me.  Nevermind the fact that it's illegal to ride on the  
footpath here, except for the occasional "shared pathway".

I'm a good boy when I'm riding these days... I even stop for red  
lights because I'm trying to learn how to track-stand and need the  
practice :)
