Thanks Bob/Bob/Dave/Paul for your comments. I see opinion is split as to which style is preferred. I wonder if this corresponds to a preference for bordered or borderless prints? Style one was an attempt to reproduce the look of an old photographic print with that 1/4" border.
Replies to specific comments: > I don't like the frame around the page at all - it serves no purpose. Would a lighter, less obtrusive frame be preferable? This was a pretty early part of the development - creating the base images used to build the frame, and wrapping it around everything else. I'm not too fond of it myself; maybe I'll lose it at some point. > The text on the single pages of style 1 falls below the line, even > on my hi-res screen, and I think the font is unnecessarily large. I'm still working on a layout that works well for portrait images. Now that I'm generating the HTML from a php script I don't have to use the same layout for all images. I'm also considering trying different image sizes. > I feel also that there's a slightly jarring discontinuity between the > main elements of picture and text which are on the drop shadowed > backgrounds - which is quite nicely done - and the page title (A Photo > ... by John F...), which is on a plain background. Maybe I need to create a section for the page title and navigation buttons that is stylistically more in tune with the page as a whole. > I think the industrial abstract could be great with some more light > in the lower left and a slightly different camera position. I can't do much about the camera position, but I have reworked this image to burn in the dark area on the lower left a little more. I'm still experimenting, but I've put a slightly different version up. > I think this is a great idea. It is cold and dark here in Chicago and > I need some extra incentive to get out and shoot. It's amazing how complicated it can be to programmatically generate a gallery with the rows in reverse monthly order, but the individual images in each month in increasing date order, and with one entry for every Saturday in the month! At present I'm still cheating, and hand- editing the list of entries on the main index page. But eventually I'll get that working automatically, and extract all the other details directly from a database. I'd be happy to share the source code with anyone who can make use of it. A weekly photo gallery, with images shot during the previous week, is a good motivator. Admittedly it helps being in California, where it's pretty likely I'll have reasonable weather on at least one day. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
