There are 2 possible reasons:
1) The position of the MX screen was altered by 3 tiny screws next to the
glass prism (the top must be removed to gain access to them). If the camera
has never been repaired or serviced (unlikely consider the age of MX), they
were glued tight during the manufacturing process. If the camera has been
serviced, quite possible the person who adjusted the camera did not glue
these 3 screws which would be "self-adjusting" over time. As a result, the
screen would be out of alignment. This is not uncommon even serviced by
Pentax.
2) The camera was serviced or repaired, and the guy forgot to put back the
correct amount of washers between the mirror box assembly and the main body.
This would cause the lens to focus beyhond infinity (the opposite of using
extension). In this case, all lenses will be affected. However, this flaw
could be compensated by adjusting the screen position. Unfortunately, this
also means you could never set your lens(es) to infinity and expect it/they
would be in focus for landscape shots (or whatever you are shooting).
