Just making sure that you have adjusted the diopter setting on the viewfinder to your vision. One time, I let my brother shoot with one of my *istD bodies for a couple of days. About 2/3 way through the first day he commented that he was struggling with focusing - couldn't really tell if he had focused properly. It suddenly dawned on me that the adjustment was for my eyes. I had him adjust it so that the readout along the bottom was very clear and sharp. Suprise! The rest of the time he was having no trouble at all.
If all is set up properly, I would think that you would do ok with the focus.
