The Gimp is a great program, but IMO it's got some problems for general purpose photographic use. The most profound issue for me is that it can't yet handle images with more than eight bits per color and it doesn't do color management. There's a "fork" of The Gimp's code base that's been enhanced to support 16-bit per color images (and maybe color management, too), but it's forked from the 1.x base of The Gimp, not the current 2.x series.
