The tripod mount is bigger, but as you said, the lens is smaller. A  
big tripod mount doesn't bother me when handholding. Just ignore it  
and grip the lens. It's also a lot lighter than the 400/t5.6. In any  
case, what it boils down to is that I don't care if the mount is  
removable. As long as it's there.
