Thanks Marnie. Actually, being encased in ice will protect the ivy from wind 
burn and subzero temperatures. It stays right at 32 degrees. When there's a 
severe frost, farmers sometimes spray water on their crops. Having them ice 
over is better than exposing them to the elements..
