If adding contrast would only sharpen and have no negative side effect I
would probably do it more.
Maybe I just need more photoshopping experience, I see a loss of detail if I
increase contrast over a certain point.

I find that  interesting. You've got it very low contrast though, somehow I
think, because it  is machinery, I'd like it sharper in contrast.
