yes, you still do it ( m42) by feel, the same way you
do it in good light, there really is no point
in ever really looking at it, but its much easier to "feel"
that the lens barrel is approximately perpendicular
to the flange and start the threading by rotating
it, than it is to do a K mount by feel because with
the k mount you have to feel around for two bumps/levers/
buttons (one on the body and one on the lens ) and align
those up to install the lens and on some of the newer
lenses and bodies this system is no longer even available
on K mounting. I do not know what you mean by multistart
threading but its not hard to start solely by feel at all.

You still have to align the start of the lenses thread with the start of

the bodies mount thread. Which is done by feel. Just like mounting a K 
mount lens.

I admit I haven't looked that hard at my Spotmatic & small collection of

M42 lenses that my boss gave me, but is it a multi start thread?
