I also shot motor racing (mainly sport car road racing - Cam Am, Trans Am) 
alot in the late 60's early 70's with my Spotmatic and a 300mm lens.
When I was shooting on the course I shot the 300 about 99.9 % of the time.
Switching lenses was not an issue.
