Regarding the Sigma 20 f1.8, while on my deathbed (off work for a couple
of days with a gastric virus),

>On paper it looks OK, although it's got that dreaded autofocus. Do
>you know anything more about it than what's on the Sigma web site?
>There's no mention that I could find wrt size, construction, or
>whether or not it contains plastic elements.

I rummaged through a pile of APs next to the bed and found a review of
four Sigmas : 20mm 1.8, 24mm 1.8, 28mm 1.8 macro and 24-70mm 2.8 in the
22nd Sept 2001 issue. The reviewer rates the 20mm very highly, and wants
one himself.

20mm 1.8:
construction - 13 elements in 11 groups
f/1.8 - f/22
measured focal length - 20.7mm
filter size - 82mm
max diameter - 87.5mm
max length - 87mm
weight - 508g

Some quick notes from article: rear focussing, non-rotating front, down
to 20 cm giving 1:4, aspherical in front and rear groups, elements
constructed of arsenic and lead-free ecological glass (!), auto-focus but
with Sigma's excellent snap-back manual focus system, can be used that
way all the time if desired, aperture: 9 blades.

The reviewer says 'the colour is accurate and the contrast punchy' (not
poochy...) and 'holds shadow and highlight detail very well'. Also 'the
large rubberised focus ring/grip is comfortable and...feels reassuringly
substantial'. And 'light dispersion throughout the aperture range is
excellent, with no vignetting, at least as far as I could tell'.
