In Windows, for those who don't mind a bit of old-fashioned DOS work, there is a much cheaper way. Open a Command prompt window Change directories to the source folder. To do a one letter substitution, "K" for "P" in this example, type the command: "rename IMG?????.jpg IMGK????.jpg" and press <Enter>.
To be really flexible, write yourself a little batch file containing this one line: rename %1?????.%2 %1%3????.%4 Save it: I called mine Prename.bat. To ensure you can use it always, save it to your Windows or WINNT folder. Then do the rename by typing (again in the command prompt, and in the appropriate folder): prename IMG JPG K JPG This will rename all your IMGPXXXX.JPG files to IMGKXXXX.JPG. The principle? The first parameter - IMG - is used to identify the first three letters of the filename. The second parameter - JPG - identifies the file type (extension). The third parameter - K - is the letter that will be placed in the fourth position in the file name. The fourth parameter -JPG - is the new file type identifier (extension) which will normally need to be the same, as different extensions can make the file unusable. You can eliminate this parameter if you will only ever do this to one type of file, but the format used allows you to rename any type of file. Done in seconds. You can do this to any type of file, if you want to rename your RAW files, simply substitute the .jpg extension with .pef. If you're worried about something going wrong, or mis-typing the command, copy the files to a temporary folder first.
