Doesn't happen here in the UK, at least not in the North West.

Agreed, but I have bought some very good lenses (optically) based on test 
reports, the Sigma 300 f/4 APO and Tamron 28-75 XR Di are amongst them. In 
fact I can't remember ever buying one I was disatisfied with, I'm speaking of 
published reports not opinions.

I tolerate most of them, but form my own opinion based on the evidence that 
is in front of me.
