I am not sure but I think you misunderstand what Auto Import is
supposed to do.

The concept is to define a place where you're going to drop files
that you want Lightroom to work with. Lightroom, once started and
assuming that you've set up the Auto Import facility appropriately,
will look for data files in that folder and then move them into its
"Managed Folder" areas, applying the presets as you've defined for
automated processing and metadata.

I tested this by setting up a folder on an external drive where I
drag and drop new files from the card to the computer. Lightroom
immediately picked them up and moved them into its Managed Folder
area, and applied the metadata template I'd specified.

You can also tell Lightroom to recognize when you put a memory card
on line and import the image files, placing them where you want them
in its Managed Folder hierarchy.

New tools, new ways of working. I tell you, Lightroom is going to
make me very happy: I created a new Library database and imported all
of the photos I'd saved in 2003. Just meandering through the Metadata
history, I was able to find and keyword about a thousand image files
in half an hour that I'd long forgotten about ... that translates to
saleable photographs in very short order. Very very useful...
